WHAT TO DO IN HOOD RIVER, OREGON

FUN

WINDSURFING

Known as the windsurfing capital of the world, Oregon’s Hood River is the perfect place for windsurfing. The gorge receives high velocity winds—sometimes up to 70mph. The Columbia River Gorge has easy access from Hood River with options for novices or experts alike. The Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association website features webcams of popular put-ins, events, map of beaches, and information on lessons.

MULTNOMAH FALLS

Located just 30 minutes outside of Portland is Multnomah Falls, Oregon’s tallest waterfall at 611 feet. According to Native American lore, Multnomah Falls was created to win the heart of a young princess who wanted a hidden place to bathe. Today just a short 5 minute walk from the parking lot is the oft photographed Benson Bridge spans the falls at the base of one of the two-drops.

The falls attracts visitors of all types and ages, with both wheelchair-accessible viewing platforms and more advanced hiking trails that lead all the way to the top. The falls steady stream runs year-round, with the highest volume in winter and spring with a partial freeze in winter. The Multnomah Falls Lodge has excellent views and is home to a restaurant, gift shop, espresso bar, and U.S. Forest Service interpretive center.

MOSIER TWIN TUNNELS HIKE

When the Columbia River Highway was built in 1921, it was necessary to build two tunnels to get through a high rock point. These tunnels had beautiful views over the river but were always a trouble spot for rockfall so in 1954, a new road was opened near water level and the tunnels were abandoned. In 1995, work was begun to reopen the tunnels for tourist use as the Historic Columbia River Highway Trail with a new surface and rebuilt walls.
